Stacking The Shelves #5: Prodigy by Marie Lu

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted on Tynga's Reviews. Basically you share what books you acquired that week whether it be physical or digital. Info here.

Sadly, this month, I only got one book! I know, I have such a sad life. It's okay though, I probably will never be able to get through the books I already have anyway. I'd get like 4 books in a week and then read at a 1 book per week pace. But anyway, this month, I got Prodigy by Marie Lu. Is it just me, or do you get mixed up with the d and the g too? Probably just me, I always think it's Progidy. *Face palm*.

This week, I received 3 unexpected lovelies in the mail. I will be reading and reviewing these as soon as possible. I normally try to get the reviews up on the day the book comes out in Australia but these may be coming a bit earlier since they are already out in most other places. Thank you to Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins. If you like any of these authors, let me know in the comments.

Stacking The Shelves #3: Books, Brains 'n Blood

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted on Tynga's Reviews. Basically you share what books you acquired that week whether it be physical or digital. All info here.

This week the only books I acquired are for the Books, Blood 'n Brains Read-A-Thon. I tried looking for all of them in the library but sadly, only found one. They had the second and third books in the Darkest Powers trilogy but of course, they didn't have the first. I wouldn't of been able to order the other books and get them shipped in time so instead I got the e-books.

Review: The Sweetest Hallelujah by Elaine Hussey

The Sweetest HallelujahAn unforgettable story of two courageous women brought together by one extraordinary little girl.
Betty Jewel Hughes was once the hottest black jazz singer in Memphis. But when she finds herself pregnant and alone, she gives up her dream of being a star to raise her beautiful daughter, Billie, in Shakerag, Mississippi. Now, ten years later, in 1955, Betty Jewel is dying of cancer and looking for someone to care for Billie when she's gone. With no one she can count on, Betty Jewel does the unthinkable: she takes out a want ad seeking a loving mother for her daughter.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, recently widowed Cassie Malone is an outspoken housewife insulated by her wealth and privileged white society. Working part-time at a newspaper, she is drawn to Betty Jewel through her mysterious ad. With racial tension in the South brewing, the women forge a bond as deep as it is forbidden. But neither woman could have imagined the gifts they would find in each other, and in the sweet young girl they both love with all their hearts. Deeply moving and richly evocative, The Sweetest Hallelujah is a remarkable tale about finding hope in a time of turmoil, and about the transcendent and transformative power of friendship.

The Sweetest Hallelujah is meant to be similar to The Help. Because I'm a really bad person, I haven't read the book or even watched the movie. I really want to one day though! I know the basic premise and I agree that fans of The Help would definitely enjoy this book. Unfortunately, I can't say that I liked it. It's not that I found a million things wrong with this book, it's just that one of the defining factors was lacking. I'd give this book a 3 STAR or 3.5 STAR rating. What else? This book comes out today! YAY!
Characters:
I feel really bad dissing the characters but there was nothing to relate to. I mean obviously I'm not like most girls in YA books either but I actually understand how they feel. This is not the writer's fault and it's just because it's aimed at a higher age group but I just couldn't. Overall though, I did like the characters. The book is set a long ago, most likely during the Civil Rights movement, which means that of course there's the separation between the 'black' and 'white' people. Billie is the little girl in the story and I liked seeing the story from her point of view. I also liked Cassie, Betty Jewel and Queen who were the main adults in the story.
Pros:
Without spoiling too much, the novel itself is very heartfelt. The third person writing really exemplifies the characters. I've read too many books that have shifting points of views that are in first person. Though I do enjoy those, I think the third person sounds a lot more professional. The story is quite unique but again, it has a similar premise to The Help. I did like the ending a lot though. It's predictable but still just as beautiful.
Cons:
Here comes that bad things. Okay well, I found this book extremely, uncaptivating. I know that's no a word but I don't want to use the word boring. For the first half, I had to read each page like twice because I had trouble comprehending it. Afterwards, I kind of just skim read the whole thing because it wasn't intriguing. It was interesting but not intriguing. That's the major fault for me.
Summary:
In the end, I think that one of the only reasons why I didn't like this book is because of my age. I definitely recommend this to the older readers out there because you'd like it better. Also, if you liked The Help,  I can see you enjoying The Sweetest Hallelujah as well.
Favourite Quote:
"Betty Jewel wondered if miracles are not prayers answered but the answer to prayers you didn't even know you should pray."

Stacking The Shelves #2: Pivot Point + Thy Will Be Done

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted on Tynga's Reviews. Basically you share what books you acquired that week whether it be physical or digital. All info here.

Last week, I had a massive book haul to show but like I said, that means I probably wouldn't have much anymore. I haven't had time to go to the library this week so if I do, tomorrow or in the following days, I'll include those books in my next Stacking The Shelves. Honestly though, my reading list has grown extensively and I'll have way too much to read for a long time. So today, I have a very little haul for you guys. Just two books. One I received for review and one I got the e-book for because I couldn't find it on my library's catalog. The e-book I downloaded was Pivot Point and it's for the Book BFFs group. I'm super excited!

Stacking The Shelves #1: Library + For Review + ARCs

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly meme hosted on Tynga's Reviews. Basically you share what books you acquired that week whether it be physical or digital. All info here.

This is my very first Stacking The Shelves! YAY! I had a pretty good week of books this time round which is why I thought it'd be the perfect time. I got books from the library and books for review both in hard form and electronic form. Most weeks, I'd get a few e-books of my own too but this week I was pretty set. I probably won't need any more books for awhile. I'm super excited to read all of these books. I've already read a few. One book I got was Unearthly by Cynthia Hand and that's for the Unearthly Radical Read-Along that I'm a part of. You can win a copy here and join too. Continue to see what else I got.

Review: Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead

Gameboard of the Gods Richelle MeadIn a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military’s most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills.
When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board.

Who loved the Vampire Academy series? I of course did and so when I saw that Richelle Mead wrote another book, I jumped on it immediately. Gameboard of the Gods is a new Adult Fiction novel, the first one in the Age of X series. I'd give this book a 4.5 STARS. The problems are minor and I feel as though they wouldn't be problems for most people. Continue reading for more details about the characters, what I loved and what I didn't.
Characters:
Gameboard of the Gods is written in three point of views. Justin, Mae and Tessa. Justin had the classic 'douche' personality but I still loved him. Mae is a praetorian, a job where she has to murder. Hence, she is a very cold character. At times, I got pretty annoyed at her because she was always so stubborn. In this book, I felt as though Tessa was left out a lot. I have a feeling that she'll be a lot more involved in the sequels though. The characters were all very interesting.
Pros:
I absolutely adored the intense mystery, built up suspense and intriguing premises. The world-building was slow and understandable even though the story it self was face paced. The story's three perspective writing allowed heaps and heaps of dramatic irony. Sometimes it was unbearable but it made the story that much better. The story was scary, haunting and almost Gothic at times with all the religious themes. I also loved the chapter names because they really foreshadowed what the chapter would be about. The flashbacks were also a nice addition. Most importantly, I was happy with the ending. It left me satisfied but wanting to read the next book.
Cons:
Sometimes the story got a little bit confusing but in the end, I connected all the dots. Like I said before, I really hated Mae's character at times. The only other con is that for me, sometimes the writing got really boring. Most of it was fast but at times it really slowed down.
Summary:
This book is titled perfectly. I definitely recommend it. I think that not everyone who enjoyed Vampire Academy will enjoy Gameboard of the Gods but I still think it's a good book. Also, I'm just noting that there is sex which is why it's an Adult book and not Young Adult. It's not excessive though so don't worry. Thank you to Penguin for sending me a review copy of this book.

Review-A-Thon: Heart Hypnotic by Delta Goodrem

Heart Hypnotic - Single, Delta Goodrem

Genres: Dance-Pop, Pop, Music
Released: 17 June 2013
℗ 2013 Sony Music Entertainment Australia Pty Ltd.

Delta Goodrem never fails to amaze me. Heart Hypnotic is a new pop song with lots of EDM elements. It's a fresh new dance song that's ready to hit the radios and clubs all over Australia and possible internationally. As a judge/coach on The Voice Australia, Delta Goodrem has released this new single at the perfect time. Fellow judge Ricky Martin also released a new song. My review of his song can be found here. But back to Heart Hypnotic, it is an amazing song with an amazing title.
Song:
I love how this song starts slow and then builds up. The piano at the beginning of the song creates a very peaceful atmosphere. Then it becomes a really upbeat dance song. Once the chorus comes around, the song has a really strong bass. The instrumentals are super fun as well. Closer to the end of the song, the tempo slows again. It really accentuates Delta Goodrem's amazing vocals.
Lyrics:
Heart Hypnotic was co-written by Ryan Tedder. He's worked with people like Zedd, Far East Movement and Gym Class Heroes which you can see is where some of Electronic Dance Pop has come from. I absolutely love the lyrics in this song. All the fancy symbolism really fits the mood of the song. My favourite lines:
"Dark nights under the setting sun,
Bright lights, come we're the only one."
Summary:
I'm so glad that after a decade, Delta Goodrem is still making music. Heart Hypnotic definitely beats Sitting on Top of the World and I'll listen to it for a long time. I hope you'll check it out. It only takes a few minutes.

Review-A-Thon: Come With Me by Ricky Martin

Come With Me - Single, Ricky Martin

Genres: Pop, Music
Released: Jun 14, 2013
℗ 2013 Sony Music Entertainment US Latin LLC

Come With Me is an Australian release that will blasting through out country's radio stations. I'm pretty young so I haven't heard much of Ricky Martin but I do now that he's a very respected artist. He's been a judge on The Voice Australia which means that this was the perfect time to release a new single. Delta Goodrem, a fellow judge, also released a new single recently. I also plan to review her song but I'll see if I can squish it in. Come With Me is a mix of lot's of different genres. In my opinion, I'd say it's mostly dance-pop.
Song:
I really love songs like this. Songs that I can just imagine being played at a club. It's super catchy and fun. I've read a few things that other people have said and they've said it has Latin undertones. I completely agree and I think it adds a really nice element to the song. The kind of song it is is hard to describe. It's a variety of so many different genres. At first I think it reminds me of Enrique Iglesias and then I think it sounds like David Guetta but then it also sounds like Jennifer Lopez. Let's just say that it sounds mainstream but in a good way. I love the way it was produced. I can tell that if it was done any other way, it may not have sounded as good as it was. Of course Ricky Martin's voice does play a big part in how good it was but the producing plays a massive part too.
Lyrics:
The lyrics surprised me. I never thought that a dance-pop song could have such powerful lyrics. Sad lyrics, uplifting beat. My favourite line:
"Don't save your love for some elusive dream."
Summary:
Well obviously, I'm just going to say that I love it. I feel like this 'Summary' part of my reviews are getting too repetitive. I'll keep doing it though because people who don't want to read the whole review can read this. I love how it was produced and I love the strong and deep lyrics! Check it out guys!

Guest Post: Inspirational Music by YA Author Suzy Turner

I love to listen to music while I write and as my books can be a little dark and eerie, I like the music to be equally haunting to inspire me.
My first series, The Raven Saga, was inspired by a visit to western Canada where much of the scenery is reminiscent of the area in and around Forks in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. No surprise then that I found myself listening to a number of songs from the soundtrack. My favourites included Lykke Li's Possibility...

...and Flightless Bird by Iron & Wine. Basically, anything with a haunting feel was put on my playlist. Aiden's Cry Little Sister (made famous in The Lost Boys movie), Klaus Bedelt's Premonition (from the movie of the same name), Lisa Marie Presley's Raven...

...there are so many! As soon as I hear the songs start, I get a tingly feel all over and I just want to write. It's an amazing feeling.
My new series, The Morgan Sisters has a bit more of an urban feel to it, as it is set primarily in London so I found myself being inspired by Coldplay and Lana del Rey...

...both of which feature in the novella, Daisy Madigan's Paradise.
The first full length novel in the series, The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw, is free at the moment so why don't you grab a copy while you can? I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it! Its sequel, The Temporal Stone is available too.

The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw

Adopted sisters Lana Beth and Emma Jane are polar opposites, but when the same strange 'tattoo' suddenly appears and winds its way up their bodies within days of each other, they soon realize there's more to their relationship than they could ever have imagined.
Sent off to London for two weeks of 'work experience', the Morgan Sisters soon find themselves being initiated into the ancient Praxos Foundation, one that protects the innocent while fighting evil, both human and supernatural.
At the same time, Lana Beth and Emma Jane must also investigate why the sweet but sometimes pesky ghost of Josiah Grimshaw just won't leave them alone.

Music Disappointments Of May 2013!

There aren't many songs that I wish I could've liked this month but there are a few. Most months, I just skip this post because I don't find many. I decided that five was enough. I'm going to sound really mean but I promise that I was just being honest. None of these songs are extremely terrible and I still urge you to check them out. These are only my opinions.

Songs I Wished I Could've Added To My Playlist:
Best Friends - Janoskians
I actually really like the Janoskians' videos even though they are really stupid. This is their second single and I was really excited until I listened to the lyrics. Also, their singing is reasonable but it's not enough for me.
"Best friends, you are my f*cking best friends.
Honestly, this is the best night ever.
And this song, I'm really feeling this song.
Honestly, the f*cking best night ever."

Live It Up (feat. Pitbull) - Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull were the dream team when they did On The Floor but this was too much of the same. The parts that were unique just didn't make up for it. I think the only part I enjoyed was when no one was rapping or singing. There was this one part where JLO was just talking and that was kind of weird for me.

#Beautiful (feat. Miguel) - Mariah Carey
Who doesn't love Mariah Carey? I love her too but I just didn't like this song. I'm not sure why because everything about the song is quite nice. I think it's a little bit to soft for me. It doesn't have that part where I just break out and start singing. There's nothing exciting to lead up to.

Blurred Lines (feat. T.I & Pharrell) - Robin Thicke
There's been a big hype going around this month. I don't know why, I just don't like the style of the music. I think the lyrics are just a little stupid. "You dah hottest girl in dah world." Yeah, I don't know. I can see why the song can be really catchy but the lyrics ruin it for me. At first, I'll nod my head to it, then I'll listen to it and be like uuuh ew. The lyrics are ruining a lot of songs for me huh?

Review: The Baddest Female 나쁜 기집애 by CL

The Baddest Female CL

Genres: Hip-Hop/Rap, Music, K-Pop
Released: 28 May 2013
℗ 2013 YG Entertainment

Today, I'm doing a review on CL's new single, The Baddest Female. There was so much hype leading up to this song. 2NE1 is definitely one of my favourite girl groups and though I don't have a favourite member, I really like CL. I was so extremely excited and was waiting for something super spectacular and it was spectacular but I'll be honest, it's not the best. It was too, for lack of a better word, swag. For me at least, it was too much.
Song:
I've always liked CL's voice and she definitely displays it in this song. The thing is, it wasn't amazing. It's unique but I feel like she could of done better. For me, there's a line between talking and rapping and CL just wasn't rapping enough. Some parts, she was almost singing and I think that those parts were my favourite. The beats in the background were actually really nice. Closer to the end of the song, there's a really dubsteppy section. I liked the dubstep elements throughout the whole song as well. Some people might hate it but I actually quite like it. For me, it was the highlight.
Lyrics:
I don't know how I feel about the lyrics. At first I thought they were a bit vain because they were just about how swagalicious CL is. The second time round though, I thought it was sending a good message. It's not vain, it's confident. My favourite lines:
"This is for all my bad girls around the world
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good, you know
Let’s light it up and let it burn like we don’t care
Let em know how it feels damn good to be bad"
It's not the best message but we all need to feel good about ourselves once in awhile right?
Summary:
All in all, I don't hate this song. It definitely could've been better but it's still a song that I will listen to often. The music video was pretty cool though. It was a bit all of the place but I thought it was really fun. I really hope you can check out this song if you haven't already. It only takes four minutes!

Review: Walks Like Rihanna by The Wanted

Walks Like Rihanna

Genres: Dance-Pop, Pop
Released: 10th May 2013
Members: Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes
℗ 2013 Global Talent Records Limited

Okay, I'm just going to be honest here, I didn't like this song. This is the first time I've done a music review of a single I actually didn't like. I really loved Glad You Came so when I found out that The Wanted have a new single called Walks Like Rihanna, I went to check it out straight away. I've been trying to let it grow on me but I just don't think it's working out. I totally understand why people would love it but I think the the song is a bit to over-hyped. I just hate that pop and boy bands are getting more and more meaningless.
Song:
If I just ignore what the lyrics are actually saying, I don't mind the song. I like how you can dance to this song for most of it but the dynamics change throughout the song. The tempo stays pretty even though. I like the beat and the synth waves in the background. It's definitely catchy and it's the type of song that where you always tap your foot.
Lyrics:
So this is where everything spirals down. Correct me if I'm wrong but the lyrics are just stupid and repetitive. The lyrics nowadays have no meaning at all. I could try to explain it but I think I should just give you a snippet:
"She can't sing, she can't dance but who cares
She walks like rihanna
She can't sing, she can't dance but who cares
She walks like rihanna
Have you seen that girl, have you seen her
With the way she moves you wanna kiss her
She'll be the girl of your dreams if you can close your eyes
You can feel that beat when she's in the room
You can feel your heart going boom boom
And all the boys they crowd around"

I'll admit that I have sung along before but I just can't enjoy the song like I would've if the lyrics were a but better.
Summary:
I feel as though boy bands are just aiming to make girls go crazy. What happened to making good music that everyone could enjoy? Good beat, silly lyrics.

Guest Post: The Break Up Recipe by Munir Bello

The Break-Up RecipeMy name is Munir Bello and I am the author of The Break Up Recipe. It's my debut  book and was released on Valentine's day 2013.
Now before you switch off and assume this is another self help book I'll assure you it's far from it. The story starts with a break up which results in the main character (the wonderfully named Mark Mutton) having a series of flashbacks that centre around his current relationship, his previous relationships and the sexual encounters sandwiched in-between.
The book takes a lighthearted look at various coming of age experiences for Mr Mutton and he is more than happy to share some of his incredibly personal and cringe-worthy experiences with you. The most popular chapter in the book finds him stranded in a crowded ladies toilet with what can mildly be described as an uncontrollable bowel.
When writing the book, the number one aim for me was to make people laugh and also present various scenarios that people could identify with when it comes to encounters with the opposite sex such as the first date, first kiss, losing your virginity and trying to grow up.
The writing process for me was quite an experience. The first night I started writing the book, I was quite intoxicated. In that state I wrote a summary of each of the chapters. Over the months that followed, I revisited each summary and wrote the story from there. Some of my personal experiences made it into the book (I'll let you separate fact from fiction) and the rest of it was the result of stories I made up as I went along. It's very strange but the chapter summaries which feature in the book had the least editing work although they were written in a state where my concentration wasn't up to scratch.
The book was written for men but on conducting test reads found that women were far more receptive to it. The finished product has a strong female following which surprises me as the language is very explicit and the humour is very dark. Turns out you ladies are curious to know what us boys are like when you're not around.
Before releasing the book I tried to think of a marketing strategy and I finally settled on a picture of me naked with the book cover in between my legs which has proven to be quite a good way of getting peoples attention when trying to promote the book. In the end the picture we settled on was one of me looking at the book cover like it was my baby which in many ways this book is.
I had a lot of fun writing the book and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Review: The Other Side by Jason Derulo

The Other Side Json Derulo

Genres: Pop, Music, R&B/Soul, Rock
Released: 16 April 2013
℗ 2013 Warner Bros. Records Inc.

Yay for another music review! Today, I'm going to tell you why I absolutely love The Other Side by Jason Derulo. I know that this song has been out for quite awhile but it didn't capture my attention until the music video was released yesterday. I'd downloaded the song when it came out and I listened to it once and kind of just forgot to add to it to my playlist. When the music video came out I was like OMG this song is actually really good!
Song:
I don't always rate songs but this one definitely gets a 5 STARS from me. It has a very uplifting beat that makes you want to party. The dance vibe accompanied Jason Derulo's voice amazingly. I think that the song is very catchy and easy to listen too. I still remember when I used to listen to In My Head and Watcha Say. I also liked Breathing which came out in 2011 but I haven't really liked a Jason Derulo song in quite a long time. Now, I remember why I loved his songs so much all those years ago.
Lyrics:
Though the song has a party feel, it doesn't have many things that you'd normally associate with those kinds of songs. Most of the lyrics are very cute, sweet and romantic. The only line that I'd personally change is "Tonight we’ll just get drunk". I think that without that, everything else is wonderful. The lyrics have an urgent tone but it's really beautiful at the same time. Lines like "Kiss me like it’s do or die" are what really make me love the song. It also makes me wish that I wasn't forever alone.
Summary:
As you probably expected, overall, this song was absolutely mind blowing. I love love loved it! I definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't already, although most people probably already have. I could listen to this song over and over all day. My neighbours might be a little annoyed at my non-stop singing but The Other Side is just one of the songs where you can't listen to it without that urge to start singing. The music video is just a tad bit raunchy though, alright, a lot raunchy.

TBR in May 2013!

Hey guys! This month is the first time I'm going to have a sort of theme. Starting new series! I don't usually have themes and I just read whatever I want, but luckily, all the books I want to read in May are new series that I've want to start. I hope to continue having themes. There will only be four books because each book is fairly long. I'm not confident that I will finish all the books I want to read this month but I will try. I'm also reading Frankenstein for school. You could say I'm cheating because Frankenstein and Kafira don't fit the theme but, yolo! They're technically the first out of one book so I'm going to let it slide. This month I'm going to read the books by the author's last names in reverse alphabetical order.

Music Of April 2013!

This month, I found many new songs. Many more than I usually do. Even though I do enjoy listening to them all, not all of them stand out to me. Closer the end of the month, new albums were released. I particularly like Snoop Dogg, sorry, Snoop Lion's new album.  U-KISS, one of my favourite groups also made a subunit called uBEAT and I also love their first mini-album. By the end of the month, the amount of new songs I added to my playlist grew quite big. I've bolded the songs that have stood out for me. I would definitely recommend checking out each and every one of these songs. I've linked a YouTube playlist and a SoundCloud playlist if you want to listen to the songs.

4MINUTE - What's Your Name?
New To My Playlist:
Here's To Never Growing Up - Avril Lavigne
DONE. - The Band Perry

Books Of April 2013!

This month, I've just had way too much time. I've been posting more than usual, and also reading more than usual! If you remember last month, I read one book. Yep, only one. I was so disappointed in myself but luckily I've picked myself up for this month. I finished all the books I was planning to read this month and all the books I was planning to read in March. In total I've read five books and done two reviews. This may seem like nothing for some people but it's quite a lot for me. My blog isn't all about books which is why I don't do a review for each book I read. I'll gladly do a review if any one asks for one though. However, I do sum up my thoughts at the end of each month! Continue reading to see my thoughts and ratings. Also, the links to my reviews, links to the Goodreads pages and links to where you can buy these amazing books.

Book Disappointment Of April 2013!

The Elite (The Selection, #2)

Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea.
America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.
Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.

What can I say? I give this book 3.5 STARS but that's me being extremely generous. I absolutely loved the first book and did a review a while back. This wasn't necessarily a bad book, just a very big disappointment. The story was good, it was well written, it was fast paced, everything was fine except for one thing. The most important thing. I hated America's attitude so much. If anyone has watched Boys Over Flowers, I hate America for the same reasons I hated Jandi. The most amazing guy loves you and don't treat him well?! He gives you everything and you can't even be respectful?! It's such an easy and obvious choice I see no point of the love triangle. Oh I don't know if I want Maxon or Aspen. Oh I want to change the world but I'm just going to get eliminated instead of marrying Prince Maxon and changing it for real. I just don't see her deal. It took the whole book for her to realize she was wrong. Jeez, took you long enough. If she ends up with Maxon in the next book, alright, a good series and I recommend it but if not, I'm taking The Selection out of my favourite books of all time. I don't want to recommend the first book if the rest is bad. Sorry for ranting but overall the book wasn't that bad. I guess I did feel a bit sorry for America but I can't help but love Maxon. Read this series if you have time but there are definitely better books you can read for now.

Guest Post: The Transformative Power of Classical Music by Warren L. Woodruff

Being a professional music teacher for twenty-five years, I could cite countless examples of how classical music has transformed lives, beginning with my own. Famous examples abound from around the world--like the Harlem Boys Choir, to Venezuela’s well known youth orchestras started by José Antonio Abreu’s program El Sistema to the work of the dynamic, charismatic conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Our collective work has not just kept alive what some think to be a dusty old art-form; it has literally transformed the lives of millions of young people.
As a child, my mother flooded our home with the sounds of classical music. Everything from an album entitled The Top Fifty Most Beloved Classical Melodies to more “serious” pieces like Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky symphonies inspired and astounded me. I sensed the immense, description-defying power of that music and realized instinctively of its unique greatness.
By age ten, I knew I’d found my life’s passion. I began to teach myself how to play the piano, with a few hints from my uncle, an amateur pianist. I used my modest skills to play hymns and offertories for my church’s weekly services. But quickly my interest went back to classical music, the music that uplifted me from my earliest memories.  By high school, I was still very small and never excelled at sports, but academics were my strength, and music became my salvation. I acquired my first real music teacher in eleventh grade and it took hours a day to achieve any degree of proficiency.
Above all, music gave me an identity and a life-long challenge. No longer did I have to be bullied because I couldn’t throw a football or catch a baseball. I could hold my head high around my fellow students, knowing that I was respected for my music, admired for a notoriously difficult skill few others had acquired.
After formal university music studies, eventually acquiring Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance and a Ph.D. in Musicology, studying piano with the world-renowned concert artist Ivan Davis, I knew with confidence I could make a living teaching others the art of playing the piano. Not only that, I knew I could teach young people something even more important:  developing a passion in their lives, giving them a sense of achievement from week to week--and even in many cases, a sense of self-confidence and identity that would last a lifetime, overcoming any other possible short-comings they may feel they possessed. What could be more rewarding? Even now, my passion for classical music resounds stronger than ever--as is my desire to spread its appreciation to the next generation.
When I wrote my novel Dr. Fuddle and the Gold Baton, I had two basic aims in mind. First, I wanted to entertain young readers in a fast-paced, enjoyable fantasy, making them feel as though they’d actually been in Orphea with Dr. Fuddle and the young heroes and fought the battle to reclaim the Gold Baton. Secondly, I wanted to pique their interest in classical music and demonstrate its transformative powers.
My overall dream is that we, as musicians and music educators all over the world join together, using music to change the lives of young people--that we continue, as a united front, our global movement to transform the lives of children, many of whom are trapped in cycles of poverty and despair. I can hope nothing more than to provide the youth of the world an escape from the challenges of their lives and from the trouble and temptations that surround them daily, inspiring them to aspire toward beautiful and meaningful goals--something higher and nobler than they ever dreamed possible.
